A baby fox was found dead in a house in the southern state of South Carolina on Saturday, CNN affiliate WPLG reported.
The Fox Chapel Baptist Church, in Fayetteville, South Carolina, is just south of the state line, and the animal’s death was initially reported to be accidental, according to the report.
The animal was discovered on Saturday night after someone in the home called 911 and reported a baby fox had been found, WPLK said.
The family reported the discovery to authorities, and a dog was brought in, WPPL said.
A spokesperson for the Fox Chapel Church said in a statement to CNN affiliate WPTV that “there is nothing to indicate that a child was in the residence at the time of the incident.”
Fox Chapel’s pastor, Pastor Mark C. Dolan, told WPTV the fox was a “good young fox” and was “just happy to be home.”
“He is doing well.
We are just hoping that his family is OK and he will come home soon,” Dolan said.”
It’s really sad,” said Fox Chapel’s parishioner, Tania Darnell.
“There’s just a lot of people that live here and the fox has been a part of our family for a long time.
There’s a lot going on, and I think they just want him home.”
Fox North reported that a Fox Chapel pastor told the AP that the fox’s death is a “gift to God.”
